Have you ever been to a destination where you stand in awe, in absolute disbelief that you’re actually there? You had seen hundreds of photos of this exact view, but now you’re here in the flesh. It’s as if everything surrounding you looks too perfect there’s no way it can possibly be real. That was me, pinching myself as I was standing 2,100 meters on top of a mountain in the Austrian Lake District.
There was snow to my left and the afternoon sun shining on my right. I was enclosed by endless mountains, the incredible Austrian Alps, and lakes of blue and green hues. As I turned the next corner, daredevil paragliders ran off the side of the mountain and gracefully floated through the stunning scenery.
The Austrian Lake District was an area I firmly decided I had to visit when my third Europe trip came around. I had seen photos of Hallstatt and its surroundings areas and knew this was going to be a destination to love. And of course The Sound of Music alone should be able to convince you of how beautiful this area of the world is.
This spectacular district, located in the heart of Austria, is an easy train or car ride form Salzburg, Vienna, and Munich. It boasts 76 clear, pristine lakes and is a haven for outdoor lovers with countless ways to enjoy the mountains, hills, caves, and lakes. The Austrian Lake District is an area that deserves to be walked and truly enjoyed. During the winter months, it’s a popular Alpine ski destination.
There’s loads of reasons you need to make it to the Austrian Lake District. It’s truly incredible, beautiful, serene, and relaxing. I’ve never been anywhere quite like it. Here’s a few reasons the Austrian Lake District needs to be on your Europe bucket list.
Because “the hills are alive with the sound of music.” And by hills I mean large, impressive mountains.

Hallstatt is hands down one of the cutest villages in the world. The whole village is a UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage site.
It’s the perfect break from city life. The air is fresh. The atmosphere is laid back. The sights are jaw-dropping.
Taking a walk anywhere in this area is peaceful and relaxing surrounded by sensational views.
