Six reasons Austrian Lake District needs to be on your European bucket list

Have you ever been to a destination where you stand in awe, in absolute disbelief that you’re actually there? You had seen hundreds of photos of this exact view, but now you’re here in the flesh. It’s as if everything surrounding you looks too perfect there’s no way it can possibly be real. That was me, pinching myself as I was standing 2,100 meters on top of a mountain in the Austrian Lake District.

There was snow to my left and the afternoon sun shining on my right. I was enclosed by endless mountains, the incredible Austrian Alps, and lakes of blue and green hues. As I turned the next corner, daredevil paragliders ran off the side of the mountain and gracefully floated through the stunning scenery.

The Austrian Lake District was an area I firmly decided I had to visit when my third Europe trip came around. I had seen photos of Hallstatt and its surroundings areas and knew this was going to be a destination to love. And of course The Sound of Music alone should be able to convince you of how beautiful this area of the world is.

This spectacular district, located in the heart of Austria, is an easy train or car ride form Salzburg, Vienna, and Munich. It boasts 76 clear, pristine lakes and is a haven for outdoor lovers with countless ways to enjoy the mountains, hills, caves, and lakes. 1. I’m there all day everyday for two months this summer! I’m living in France and it takes my breathe away no matter if I am in the North East or south west! Thank you so much for sharing because your photos are stunning and you have convinced me! I also have a travel blog if you would like to check it out!

  2. Wow, that area looks gorgeous. I knew Hallstatt was charming, but I hadn’t seen photos of all the surrounding area. Definitely bucket list worthy! I’d say the Peruvian Andes took my breath away.

  3. Those Austrian Alps are nothing shy of amazing! I would definitely want to visit the UNESCO world heritage village. So cute. 🙂

  4. Have known of Hallstadt for years, but didn’t know of the Lakes District. Your article is just a reminder that we need to find our way there.

  5. Looks incredible. Definitely adding this to the Austria trip I was planning. One small tip: please add a map so I can see the route/locations since I’m really coming back to this post since it was so inspirational. 🙂

  6. I visited Halstatt a long time ago. The town is absolutely beautiful and picturesque. I’d love to spend more time in Austria and enjoy the lakes and mountains in the Lake District. The area looks stunning!

  7. We had a similar feeling when we visited Interlaken and the Jungfrau region in Switzerland, absolutely stunning views. This looks equally as breathtaking and would definitely love to visit one day!

  8. Your pictures are really amazing! As well as the lakes, of course! I am for sure bookmarking this for one day (crossing my fingers it would be soon) when I visit Australia! And the village looks so picturesque! I so want to be there right now!

    1. I swam in Lake Hallstatt in June. If you can handle the cold, it’s definitely possible. I stayed in Obertraun for a couple nights and walked into Hallstatt (there’s lots of buses too) because it was cheaper. I enjoyed it ’cause it was much quieter over there too. Let me know if you need any tips or recommendations!

  9. Thanks for sharing! I haven’t discovered much of Europe yet. When I make it over there, I will absolutely remember Austria’s Lake District! It reminds me of Chile’s Los Lagos Region. Also stunningly beautiful!
